Composed of three interconnecting buildings, La Vittoria, La Rivale and La Favorita, the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria is located in an area rich of archaeological remains, where it is said the Roman Emperor Augustus had his villa. Important evidence of the past are the ruins of a Roman pool (natatio) discovered next to the main pool of the hotel and still visible. Among the finds are some decorative marble elements and a lead pipe (fistula) for water outflow. The ruins of a spa and a gallery (crypta), connecting to the harbor and today still open, were also found in the park. The harmonious balance between modernity and classic elegance is appreciated today by national and international guests, by VIPs and businessmen as it was in the past by musicians, writers, philosophers and noblemen, who used to come here and spend the Winter months in the mildness of the Mediterranean climate. All visitors crossed the Art Nouveau entrance gate in Piazza Tasso and walked down the alley, discovering the beauties of the hotel and of its setting. Over the years the staff have welcomed many of the world's celebrities and the visitors' book reads like Who's Who.
Every single spot of the hotel, from the 97 finely furnished and decorated bedrooms to the common areas, offers the guest the atmosphere of a by-gone era and some of the most contemporary comforts. Masterpieces of XVIII and XIX centuries, Louis XVI, Arts and Crafts, Beidermeier furniture, Neapolitan paintings, Art Nouveau pendants and dramatic frescoes embellish all the bedrooms and salons.
The Art Nouveau-style Winter Garden, precious space on the ground floor with wood "grillages" and beautiful flower baskets; the Reading Room, bright room with frescoed ceiling where you can observe photographs, paper cuttings and autographs, preserved in an album, to testify the sojourn of many celebrities as well as common people; the Belle Epoque Music Room, with its lush plants, elegant furniture made by local craftsmen (marquetry) and its beautiful plaster frame representing kids and natural elements. Not to forget the majestic Vittoria dining room, with its waxed parquet and original decorated ceilings of "fin-de-siecle". All salons feature air conditioning, wifi connection, cable radio with soft music. Also praiseworthy are the two main staircases of the Vittoria and the Rivale buildings with beautiful original restored frescoes.
The Vittoria Terrace is one of the most famous and celebrated places in Sorrento. Adornated with Roman marble busts, it overlooks the Marina Piccola of Sorrento offering guests the magic of the view of the Gulf of Naples. Here guests can taste an aperitif listening to live music, in an evocative feel, admiring the sunset above the islands. The terrace also hosts concerts, gala or buffet dinners and events. On the terrace is also a capacious and panoramic lift to the harbor: quick and comfortable, it is the main entrance of the hotel when travelling by sea.
The magic of the hotel has been chosen, over the years, by television, cinema and fashion crews.
The hotel also offers a private yacht for tours along the coast and the islands looking for beaches, grottos, hidden bays where to swim and suntan as well as diving and snorkelling trips in the Marine Area of Punta Campanella. All activities are assisted by instructors and qualified staff providing the necessary equipment.
